Wallner's 2OT Header Leads Women's Soccer to Victory

Brewers win season opener over Moravian in double-OT thriller

BETHLEHEM, PA - A header from sophomore Madio Wallner with just 51 seconds remaining in double-overtime lifted the Vassar College women's soccer team to a 1-0 win at Moravian College on Friday evening. The contest marked the season-opener for both squads.

Holding the possession advantage following a corner kick from junior defender Brenna McMannon (Colchester, VT), the Brewers saw sophomore Emma Tanner (Florence, MA) chip the ball in on goal. Wallner was there at the corner to head the ball in past Greyhounds keeper Siobhan O'Sullivan-Evangelista (Wayne, NJ).

The Brewers were tested early as senior Juliana Caranci (Philadelphia, PA) fired in back-to-back shots on goalie Fiona Walsh (Hackettstown, NJ), but the junior stood her ground to keep the game scoreless.

Wallner nearly gave Vassar the win twice, sending a header in at the 85th and 87th minute, but her headers went wide of the Moravian goal to send the contest into overtime.

Walsh stood strong for the victory, recording seven saves over 109:09 minutes of action. O'Sullivan-Evangelista shouldered the loss with five saves in 64:09, while Jamie Daly played 45 minutes with two stops.

The Brewers return to action on Sunday at 2pm when they host New York University at Gordon Field.
