Box Score SCHENECTADY, NY – Despite the cold and rainy conditions outside, the Vassar College men's tennis team was able to play its Liberty League match against Union as scheduled on Friday afternoon at the Sportime Tennis Club's indoor courts. And the Brewers (7-5, 3-2 Liberty) were glad they could, as they handed the Dutchmen (5-3, 2-1 Liberty) their first conference loss of the season, 8-1.
Vassar swept the three doubles matches.
Allen Sokolov (Woodland Hills, CA) and
Jeremy Auh (Scottsdale, AZ) registered a hard-fought 8-6 triumph over Austin Egna and Max Egna in the No. 1 position, while the Brewers' No. 2 pair of
Nicolas Demaria (New Hyde Park, NY) and
Mathew Yee (Sha Tin, Hong Kong) needed a tiebreaker before knocking off Ioannis Binopoulos and David Bond by an 8-7 count. At No. 3 doubles,
Adam Krueger (Bay Village, OH) and
David Gandham (Ann Arbor, MI) earned an 8-3 win over Zach Kaplan and Del Schunk.
At No. 1 singles, Gandham cruised to a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Binopoulos. Auh also posted a relatively easy win in the No. 6 position. He topped Kaplan by a score of 6-4, 6-3. Yee held on to defeat Schunk, 6-3, 7-5, at No. 2 singles, while No. 3
Jamie Anderson (Constantine, KY) earned a hard-fought 7-5, 7-6 triumph against Cameron Klepper.
The No. 4 singles match between Sokolov and Austin Enga went to a third set. Egna took the first before Sokolov claimed the second to force a third set, which he also won to seal a 6-7, 6-3, 10-7 victory. Enga's brother, Max, did pick up a singles win for the Engineers in the No. 5 position. He defeated
Mihajlo Ivanovic (Belgrade, Serbia) by a 6-2, 6-3 count.
On Saturday, the Brewers return home for the first time in nearly two months, when they welcome NYU (3-3) to the Josselyn Tennis Courts for a 1 p.m. matchup.
