POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The weather moved the action indoors, but the Vassar women's tennis team closed the regular season with a dominating 9-0 win over RIT on Sunday afternoon. The Brewers only dropped one set in the victory at Walker Field House.
"Today was one of our best played matches of the year," said head coach Kethy Campbell. "We competed extremely well throughout the line-up, playing aggressively, yet very smart tennis."
Frances Cornwall and
Tara Edwards only gave up one point in an 8-2Â victory against Anne Taylor and Kristen Zablonski at the first doubles.
Sarra Yekta and
Melina Stavropoulos played the second court, downing the Tigers' 8-5. Things were closer at the third court, but
Morgane Flournoy and
Ashley Fair edged Claire Casalnova and Annie Steinbrink 8-7 in the end.
"Sweeping the doubles gave us a lot of momentum going into the singles. We had a lot of confidence executing many tactics that we've been working on which was rewarding."  Â
Vassar continued to roll in singles play. Cornwall took the first court win 6-0, 6-2, and No. 2 Yekta won 6-3, 6-1. Edwards recorded the clean sweep against Shayna Ginster, going 6-0, 6-0. At the fourth spot, Stavropoulos won 6-2 before Zablonski won the second 7-6. The freshman then won the close tiebreaker 10-6. Flournoy went undefeated on her senior day, tallying 6-2, 6-0 victory at the sixth court.
Vassar closes the season 13-6 overall and 7-1 in the Liberty League. The Brewers now travel to the Liberty League Championships on May 3-5 in Ithaca, NY.
