Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Vassar Falls To Union To Close Regular Season

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Vassar women's lacrosse team kept the first half close and fought back in the second, but it was the Dutchwomen who came out on top 11-9 in the final game of the regular season. Senior Fiona MacLeod (Garden City, NY) led the Brewers with four goals.

After three unanswered Union goals in the first six minutes, freshman Caeli Porette (Stony Point, NY) tacked on a goal at 18:30 to get the Brewers on the board. Union's Hannah Rosenberg responded with a score of her own to make it 4-1, but Fiona MacLeod (Garden City, NY) found the back the cage off a free position shot to keep it a two-score game. Another Union goal made it 5-2 with 9:43 remaining. Porette then scored off another free position shot, and then Kelly Pushie (Mahwah, NJ) scored off a Tessa Waters (Skokie, IL) feed to cut the lead to 5-4. The Dutchwomen prevented a late first half run though, scoring the next three with two coming in the final 30 seconds.

Union was looking to take over after the intermission, shutting out the Brewers in the first 12 minutes of the second. The Dutchwomen scored twice before Porette netted her sixth hat trick of the season at 16:05. Twenty seconds later, MacLeod netted the unassisted goal to put the score 10-7. Porette won the ensuing draw control and a foul on Pushie set up the free position score at 14:22.

A Dutchwomen timeout set up the home team for a score at 10:22, and the Union defense held Vassar scoreless until MacLeod broke through with 4:09 left in the game. With the score 11-9, Union did not allow a single Brewers shot following the goal until the final nine seconds. Porette attempted the final two shots, but the Dutchwomen defense did not break.

Porette finished with three goals, while Pushie tacked on two scores. Porette also led the team with five draw controls. Jackie Molloy (Buffalo Grove, IL) made eight save in her start in goal.

The Brewers now have to wait and see if the qualify for next week's Liberty League Championships. More information will come once it is available.
