Season Ends In High-Scoring Affair Against Skidmore

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – In total, 15 different players scored in today's Liberty League first round game, but it was the fourth-seeded Thoroughbreds coming out on top 24-19. Skidmore's Cas Szwajkowski had a game-high eight goals. Caeli Porette led the Brewers with five goals.

Action picked up right at the start with seven goals scored in the first nine minutes. Grace Connerty and Porette traded the first four scores and then Fiona MacLeod found the back of the net at 22:41 to give Vassar a 3-2 lead. Szwajkowski picked up her first goal 20 seconds later, but goals from Ashley Roberts, Alessandra Fable and Kelly Pushie made it a 6-3 contest midway through the half.

Szwajkowski tallied three of the next four Skidmore goals, but MacLeod broke through the defense off a Pushie feed to keep it tied 7-7. The Thoroughbreds offense continued to pick up in the final 10 minutes, outscoring Vassar 6-2 to take a 13-9 lead at the intermission.

Skidmore scored 35 seconds into the second and then again at 27:56 to go up 15-9. Vassar's offense picked up behind two-straight goals from Pushie and another from Tessa Waters. The Brewers would pull within two after Melanie Silverman, Pushie and Porette all notched goals to lessen the lead to 17-15. Six goals from Skidmore in an eight minute span put the game at 23-17, and the Brewers were unable to catch up.

Pushie finished with seven points (four goals, three assists), MacLeod had four points (two goals, two assists) and Silverman had three points (one goal, two assists). Waters, Fable and Roberts all had two goals. Sydney Nemphos led the defense with five groundballs and three caused turnovers. Jackie Molloy had 15 saves starting in goal.
