Game Recap: Baseball |

Brewers Split on Day One of Union Series

AMSTERDAM, NY- The Vassar College baseball team split on day one of its Liberty League Conference series against the Union College Dutchmen winning 1-0 in the first game before dropping a 12-3 decision Friday inside Shuttleworth Park.

The Brewers are now 12-19 overall and 6-12 in conference play on the 2019 campaign.

Game 1

Patrick Fitzgerald (Phoenix, MD) earned his third win, pitching six innings. Meanwhile Bryan Rubin (Bryn Mawr, PA) notched his first save of the season.

Matt Martino (Hauppauge, NY), Taylor Smach (Manlius, NY), Daniel Bonfiglio (New York, NY) and Rubin all connected with hits, though the only run of the game came in the top of the seventh inning.

With one player on base and only one out, Sam Brinster (Long Beach, NY) reached 3rd base on an error propelling Connor Levchuck (Greenlawn, NY) home.

Three swift outs in the bottom of the seventh and the game was over.

Game 2

Union got on the board first securing on run in the first inning. Though the Brewers crossed homeplate with two runs in the top of the second inning. The bases loaded due to Evan Trausch (San Diego, CA), Matt Schwartz (Dix Hills, NY), and Robert Pinataro (Binghamton, NY) being walked, a Bonfiglio double to right field advanced Pinataro to third and sent Schwartz and Trausch home.

Down 3-2 entering the top of the fourth inning, Vassar leveled the score with a Schwartz homerun to right field. This was the last run the Brewers would score.

The Dutchmen would score an additional nine runs before ending the game.

Schwartz lead Vassar with two hits, while Bonfiglio contributed two RBIs.

Max Spencer (San Diego, CA) is credited with the loss.

Vassar returns to the mound for day two of the series tomorrow inside Shuttleworth Park. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
