SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - The Vassar College baseball team dropped both ends of a Liberty League doubleheader with Skidmore Saturday afternoon, falling 11-3 in the opener and 12-6 in the second contest.
Game One – Skidmore 11, Vassar 3
Skidmore's Jay Gamboa pitched all seven innings to pick up his sixth win of the season. He only allowed six Brewer hits, while striking out eight Vassar batters.
Max Spencer takes the loss for Vassar, pitching 65 times and recording two strikeouts.
Vassar scored first though in the top of the first, as senior
Bryan Rubin doubled to left field that allowed
Matt Martino to score. Skidmore answered back one run in the second and then the Thoroughbreds went off in the third, scoring nine runs. Vassar got back on the board when
Jason Salerno homered to left field and put the score 10-2. Matt Swartz then singled to left field to allow Rubin in for the run. Skidmore more scored once more in the sixth.
Game Two – Skidmore 12, Vassar 6
Vassar took a 6-4 lead at the top of the fourth, but Skidmore capitalized on an eight-run eighth inning to pull off the comeback win.
The Thoroughbreds opened with four runs in the fourth. The Brewers got on the board at the top of the third when Martino singled to bring Salerno in and put Rubin on second.
Evan Trausch then hit a double to allow Rubin to score. Vassar scored four runs in the fourth to take the lead.
Sam Brinster scored first on a
Daniel Bonfiglio bunt, and he in turn had the run off a Martino single. Salerno then reached home after a fielder's choice to take the 6-4 lead.
Skidmore rallied from the deficit, scoring seven-unanswered runs until the eighth inning.
The two teams will be back in action Sunday at 11 a.m. for two more Liberty League contests on Prentiss Field.
