POTSDAM, N.Y. – Sophomore
Alessandra Fable (Orlando, FL) has scored at least one goal in seven consecutive games this season, but her four were not enough as Clarkson edged Vassar 16-12 in Liberty League play on Saturday afternoon. In total, seven Brewers scored.
With the loss Vassar drops to 4-3 and 1-1 in the conference, while Clarkson moves to 5-4 and 2-1 in league play.
Despite a quick 3-0 start in the first four minutes, the Golden Knights responded with their own 3-0 spurt to tie the game 3-3 at 21:41. Senior
Fiona MacLeod (Garden City, NY) notched the unassisted score at 19:12 to put the Brewers up 4-3, but a Clarkson goal tied it up again. Then at 14:11, senior
Emily Hamburger (Clarksville, MD) tallied her third goal of the season to go up one.
Another 3-0 Clarkson run from 11:17 to 9:39 gave the Golden Knights a 7-5 advantage, but scores from
Tessa Waters (Skokie, IL) and
Melanie Silverman (Southbury, CT) tied things up once again. Clarkson found a spark in the final two minutes of the half, scoring three unanswered to retake the lead for the last time.
Clarkson led 10-7 at halftime, and scored less than a minute into the second. Two straight goals from Fable kept in a two-score game, but another Clarkson run gave the Golden Knights a 14-9 lead with 6:39 remaining. The Brewers hung in though, scoring three goals in a minute span. Porette launched an unassisted shot at 4:32 and Fable then scored 30 seconds later off a MacLeod feed.
Kelly Pushie (Mahwah, NJ) closed the run with her goal at 3:37 to cut the lead to 14-12. Clarkson would not relinquish their lead though, tallying the final two scores to secure the win.
Fable led the team with six points (four goals, two assists), while MacLeoad had five points (two goals, three assists). Porette finished with three points on two goals and an assist. Waters, Pushie, Hamburger and Silverman had one goal each. Porette led Vassar with nine groundballs, 11 draw controls and five caused turnovers.
