Brewers Open Liberty League With Win Over Saints

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – After being tied 6-6 at halftime, Vassar (4-3) scored three-straight goals to open the second to pull away for the 12-9 Liberty League win against St. Lawrence (1-5) on Saturday afternoon. The Brewers are now on a four-game winning streak and are 1-0 in league play.

Vassar went up 2-0 to start the game behind goals from Alessandra Fable (Orlando, FL) and Caeli Porette (Stony Point, NY). The Saints went on a quick run soon after, netting three scores within a three-minute span to take a 3-2 advantage. At 19:10, Fiona MacLeod (Garden City, NY) picked up Kelly Pushie (Mahwah, NJ) for the score, and then Porette connected for the free position goal.

The Saints went on another 3-0 run, but Porette broke the streak while recording her first-career hat trick at 9:06. Freshman Maya Barrett-Tzannes (Lexington, MA) closed the half with the final goal to tie the game 6-6.

The Brewers came out strong at the start of the second. After Tessa Waters (Skokie, IL) won the initial draw control, she dished a quick pass to Ashley Roberts (Bala Cynwyd, PA) to retake the lead. St. Lawrence received a yellow card at 21:11, and the Brewers took advantage of the woman-up scenario. Pushie passed quickly from the left side to Waters coming in from the right. Waters slipped through the defense for the close-range goal. Pushie scored two minutes later to put Vassar up 9-6.

St. Lawrence would chip back in, cutting the lead to 10-9 at 7:53, but another Saints' yellow card only helped Vassar in the final minutes. MacLeod found net off a Porette feed at 6:59, and then Grace Goodwin-Boyd (Florence, MA) sealed the game at 4:25.

Porette finished with four points (three goals, one assist) and Pushie also had four points (two goals, two assists). MacLeod had three points (one goal, two assists), while Waters Goodwin-Boyd and Gabi Patick (East Rockaway, NY) all recorded two points. Porette also had a game-high six draw controls. On defense, Sydney Nemphos (Baltimore, MD) and Roberts led the team with two caused turnovers each. Freshman Jackie Molloy (Buffalo Grove, IL) tallied four saves in net for Vassar.

Vassar now starts a four-game road trip starting with Clarkson on Sat. Mar. 30 at 1 p.m.
