ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, NY- The Vassar College baseball team scooped up a pair of tough wins in its first Liberty League Conference double header defeating the Bard College Raptors 5-4 in game one, and 7-6 in game two Saturday inside Honey Field.
Game One
Â
The Brewers got on the board first in the bottom of the third inning. With just one out and
Robert Pinataro (Binghamton, NY) on second and
Matt Schwartz (Dix Hills, NY) on third, a
Matt McGannon (Redding, CT) single up the middle sent both runners home. Next at bat,
Bryan Rubin (Bryn Mawr, PA) connected with a single through the left side sending McGannon to third base. A
Matt Martino (Hauppauge, NY) bunt advanced the runners and McGannon ran in the Brewer's third run of the inning.
Â
During their next at bat, the Brewers scored another run. A Pinataro double to right center field moved
Daniel Bonfiglio (New York, NY) to third before
Connor Levchuck (Greenlawn, NY) grounded out to the short stop, sending Pinataro to third and Bonfiglio across home plate.
Â
The Raptors would secure one run in the top of the fifth inning and an additional three runs in the top of the sixth inning to level the score.
Â
However, the Brewers would score on their last out of the game to notch the win. The Brewers would open the half inning with a
Sam Brinster (Long Beach, NY) double. Levchuck was hit by a pitch, and Bard brought in a new pitcher. The first Brewer to face the new pitcher, McGannon reached on a fielder's choice and Levchuck was tagged out as Brinster moved to third. At the plate,
Bryan Rubin swung for a single to center field as Brinster ran in the last run of the game.
Â
Max Spencer (San Diego, CA) went for six inning, giving two hits and seven walks, though
Patrick Fitzgerald (Phoenix, MD ) is credited with the win and is now 1-1 on the season.
Â
Game Two
Â
The game opened with Bard immediately capturing the lead with two runs in the top of the first inning.
Â
Though, the Brewer's looked to match that offensive spirit. With the bases loaded and only one out,
Taylor Smach (Manlius, NY) was walked, earning himself an RBI and the Brewer's first run of the game.
Â
Still trailing by one, Vassar made an offensive power move in the bottom of the fifth inning. McGannon opened the half inning with a walk. A Brinster single up the middle and a Martino walk, and the bases were loaded.
Evan Trausch (San Diego, CA) was walked forcing McGannon home and a run for the Brewers. Next at bat, Smach singled to the right side, opening the lane for Trausch and Martino to advance and Brinster to score. Bonfiglio approached the plate and hit into a double play. With two outs,
Dawson Dullnig (San Antonio, TX) doubled down the left field line as Trausch ran in the Brewer's fourth run.
Â
The leader of the game would change hands again at the top of the sixth inning as the Raptors earned two runs. Although, the Brewers would level the score before taking back the lead in the bottom of the sixth with
Jesse Mulham (Syosset, NY) and McGannon both scored on wild pitches.
Â
Bard would score another run in the top of the seventh to even the score again. Be that as it may, the Brewers dug deep and won the game off a Levchuck single to right field.
Â
Mitchell Mullock (Moorestown, NJ) went 5.1 innings on the mount, while
Logan Willans (Ambler, PA) went 1.2. Willans is now 1-1 on the 2019 campaign.
Â
McGannon was walked three times, while Martino and Trausch twice and Smach, Bonfiglio, Dullnig and Schwartz were all walked once.
Â
With the set of wins, the Brewers move to a record of 6-6 overall and 2-0 in conference.
Â
