SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Vassar men's lacrosse team (1-2) faced a challenging road test to Swarthmore (3-0), but the Garnet pulled off the 17-7 victory on Saturday afternoon.
Michael Mullen (Dresher, PA) and
Spencer Duryee (Whitehouse Station, NJ) led Vassar with two goals each.
Connor Deehan (Westwood, MA) had two points on two assists while
Liam Neville (Davis, CA),
Kyle Cherry (Manhasset, NY) and
Nick Diamond (Boca Raton, FL) had a goal apiece.
Cameron Erdman (Wyckoff, NJ) went 8-of-23 on faceoffs and grabbed three groundballs.
Stefan Fleps (Winfield, IL) and
Michael Killion (McLean, VA) also had three groundballs.
Erik Mikelinich (Dix Hills, NY) took the loss for Vassar with eight saves, while Frankie Dillon earned the win for Swarthmore with 12 stops. Brewers' goalkeeper
Matt Boyd (Essex Fells, NJ) also saw time in net, fending away one shot in the second half, as the Garnet outshot the Brewers 44-27 overall.
Playing in front of a crowd of 197, the Brewers scored first at 10:01. Thomas Meade (Corvallis, OR) dished the pass to Mullen for the opening score. Swarthmore netted the next two before Diamond scored in the man-up scenario with 1:25 left in the first to tie it 2-2. Swarthmore's Will Vespole score with four seconds left to give the Garnet the lead and that spurred a nine-goal run that went until the third quarter.
The Brewers would score three times in the third to cut away at the lead, but Swarthmore still held a 14-5 advantage heading into the fourth. The deficit proved to be too much as the Garnet scored three-straight goals in the final act.
Austin Chang led Swarthmore with seven goals, while Ryan Mulvey and Kieran McKenna added three each. Jake Ross and Zander Levitz both had four assists.
Vassar returns home on Tuesday, March 5 to face Mount Saint Mary (NY) at 6 p.m. at Weinberg Field.
