WHITTIER, Calif. - The Vassar women's tennis team had a strong showing against Whittier on Friday, recording a 9-0 victory against Poets. The Brewers swept both the doubles and singles.
No. 1 spot
Tara Edwards (Littleton, CO) and
Frances Cornwall (Poway, CA) earned a hard fought victory, 8-6, over a very strong Whittier pair. Cornwall served for the match at 7-4 making every first serve to set up her partner, not giving up a point in the final game. Additionally,
Vista Grinde (Virgina Beach, CA) and
Cara Kizilbash (Pensacola, FL) won 8-0 at the #4 exhibition doubles spot. At the In singles Vassar completed the sweep winning every singles match in two sets.
No. 3 Edwards and No. 5
Morgane Flournoy (Grosse Pointe, MI) earned 6-0, 6-0 victories. No. 1 Cornwall and No. 2
Sarra Yekta (Las Vegas, NV) both closed out tight first sets with 6-4 scores and continued to gain momentum closing their second sets with 6-1 scores.
Melina Stavropoulos (Atherton, CA), No. 4 singles, was the clinch match for Vassar's win over Whittier College.Â
Joyce Park (Gig Harbor, WA) earned a 6-3, 6-3 win in the No. 6 spot for Vassar.Â
"I'm pleased with the improvement we've demonstrated all week and today it really came together for the Vassar team. We executed smart, disciplined and composed tennis," said head coach
Kathy Campbell. "The Whittier coach paid the Vassar team the highest compliment by remarking about Vassar's outstanding display of sportsmanship."
Vassar wraps up their spring break trip on Saturday against Chapman at 2 p.m.
