CLAREMONT, Calif. – On Monday, the Vassar women's tennis team bounced back with a solid 8-1 victory over Hardin-Simmons in the second game of spring break. Sophomore Frances Cornwall (Poway, CA) earned a win at No. 1 singles and then teamed up with junior Tara Edwards (Littleton, CO) for the doubles triumph.
 
"Vassar played smart and patient tennis in defeating Hardin-Simmons, a team that executed a very consistent style of play throughout the line-up," said head coach Kathy Campbell. "We had to construct the point, select the right opportunities to finish the point and be disciplined in shot selection. I'm pleased with our strong fitness level coming off a demanding and long match yesterday.  We were fresh today."
 
Cornwall and Edwards downed their opponents 8-3 at the first doubles, while the duo of Sarra Yekta (Las Vegas, NV) and Cara Kizilbash (Pensacola, FL) won 8-3. Senior Morgane Flournoy (Grosse Pointe, MI) and junior Ashley Fair (Laguna Beach, CA) edged Liz Lopez and Kelsey Doege at the third doubles.
 
At No. 1 singles, Cornwall defeated Maddie Hammond by marks of 6-3, 6-1. Yekta then picked up the clean sweep against Sabra Hullo, going 6-0, 6-0, while Edwards had strong 6-3, 6-4 victory against Abigail Kendall at the No. 3. IN the No. 4 match, Hardin-Simmons player Kyra Mobley defeated Melina Stavropoulos (Atherton, CA) 6-4 in the first set, but Stavropoulos rallied for the 6-2 second-set win. Unfortunately, Mobley pulled off the narrow 11-9 win in the final. Flournoy beat Emily Shaffer 6-0, 6-3 at the No. 6 singles.
 
The Brewers return to action on Tuesday to face CalTech at 6 p.m.
