FORT MYERS, FL- Despite six hits on the day, the Vassar College baseball team dropped a tough 5-1 decision Monday morning to the Baruch College Bearcats.
In the nine-inning game, 17 Brewers saw the field with three pitching changes. Yet,
Jake Silver (Wellington, FL) was credited with the loss.
The Brewers and the Bearcats were scoreless through the first three innings, but Vassar got on the board first in the top of the fourth, off a
Connor Levchuck (Greenlawn, NY) walk forcing
Matt Schwartz (Dix Hills, NY) home. The Brewers ended that inning with three runners left on base.
However, Baruch took advantage of their next at bat and secured two RBIs; a hit to left field and a single.
Trailing 3-1, in the top half of the seventh, Vassar had its best chance to level the game as
Cameron Skudin (Melville, NY) and
Sam Brinster (Long Beach, NY) were walked and
Matt McGannon (Redding, CT) connected with a single. Though three straight fielding outs ended the half inning.
The Bearcats would maintain their lead and add two more to the scoreboard in the bottom seventh and eighth.
Jesse Mulham (Syosset, NY),
Brent Shimoda (Aiea, HI), Elliot Layne (Los Angeles, CA),
Daniel Bonfiglio (New York, NY), Skudin, and McGannon all registered one hit.
The Brewers will have a quick turnaround as they continue their spring break road trip, facing the Plymouth State University Panthers in Fort Myers, tomorrow morning at 9 a.m.
