Championship Central

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. –
The 29th-ranked Vassar College women's tennis team began action at the 37th Seven Sisters Championship with a pair of matches on Saturday.  After defeating Bryn Mawr (3-1) by a 4-1 margin, the Brewers (4-2) posted a 5-0 win over Smith (0-2) in their second match of the day at Walker Field House.

At the Seven Sisters Championship, teams play five matches, with both singles and doubles taking place simultaneously.  As a result, players can only participate in one match.  Both of Vassar's encounters on Saturday featured four singles matchups and one doubles tilt.

Against Bryn Mawr, the Brewers' doubles tandem of Cara Kizilbash (Pensacola, FL) and Vista Grinde (Virginia Beach, VA) earned a 6-0, 6-0 win over Libby Hemp and Christina Xue.  Morgane Flournoy (Grosse Pointe, MI) played two tight sets at No. 2 singles before emerging victorious, 6-4, 6-4 over Audrey Camacho.  At No. 3 singles, Joyce Park (Gig Harbor, WA) beat Caroline Horvatits 6-2, 6-2, while Ashley Fair (Laguna Beach, CA) defeated Francesca Caramaza 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 4 position.

Bryn Mawr did manage one victory at No. 1 singles.  Amalia Parrish topped Melina Stavropoulos (Atherton, CA) by a 6-2, 6-2 count.

After sitting out the Bryn Mawr match, Sarra Yekta (Las Vegas, NV) and Tara Edwards (Littleton, CO) returned to the lineup against Smith.  And they both posted a 6-0, 6-0 win.  Yekta defeated Allison Ahern at No. 1 singles, while Edwards beat Joanna Kim in the No. 2 spot.

Flournoy, meanwhile, earned her second win of the day in the No. 3 position, defeating Kara Van Allen 6-0, 6-0.  Park also picked up a second singles win, knocking off Elsa Hillis 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 4 matchup.  In the doubles contest, Kizilbash teamed with Fair to topple Gabby Mingolelli and Betsy Hillier, 6-0, 6-0.

Vassar concludes the tournament with two matches on Sunday.  The Brewers take on Mount Holyoke (3-0) at 10:30 a.m. before facing No. 35 Wellesley (1-0) at 3:30 pm.  The Vassar-Wellesley matchup has determined the Seven Sisters champion every year since 2002, with the Brewers winning the last four titles.
