Seven Brewers Score In Season-Opening Win Over Drew

MADISON, N.J. – Freshman Logan Hyde (Manhasset, NY) tallied four goals in his first game for Vassar men's lacrosse, as the Brewers outlasted the Rangers 10-6 on Saturday afternoon at Ranger Stadium. In total, seven different Vassar players netted goals.

Vassar moves to 1-0 overall in the young season, while Drew slips to 0-2.

After a quiet first quarter, Tomas Meade (Corvallis, OR) scored first at 1:36 to spur a three-goal run within the next 50 seconds. Following a faceoff win, Matthew Lowery (Bel Air, MD) picked up Michael Mullen (Dresher, PA) for another score at 1:31. Freshman Connor Deehan (Westwood, MA) then scored off the Liam Neville (Davis, CA) feed for his first-career goal.

Hyde scored his first goal at 9:03 in the second with some help from Neville to put Vassar up 4-0. Drew got on the board at 4:32 when Kevin Goettlich passed to Seamus O'Connor for his second goal of the season. Vassar cut any chance for the Rangers to build momentum, answering with two goals to close the half. Senior Pat Gibbons (Garden City, NY) fired the shot into the back of the net at 3:19, and Hyde scored soon after at 2:47.

The Brewers built a comfortable 8-2 lead in the third quarter with scores from Nick Diamond (Boca Raton, FL) and Hyde. A goal from Kyle Cherry (Manhasset, NY) at 13:49 in the fourth gave Vassar the 9-2 lead. Drew began to rally soon after, netting four unanswered to make it 9-6 at 3:32. The Brewers defense held up to the pressure. Matt Boyd (Essex Fells, NJ) made a clutch save at 2:33, and then TK Murphy (Windsor, CT) caused a turnover to retake possession. The Brewers made their final successful clear and Hyde closed the game at 1:15 with his final goal.

In the "X," Lowery won 13-of-16 faceoffs and also had a game-high eight groundballs. Defenders Stefan Felps (Winfield, IL) and Cooper Vorel (Boonton Township, NJ) both had two caused turnovers. Vassar outshot Drew 47-31 and had 26 shots on goal. Drew had the ground ball advantage at 28-27.

Erik Mikelinich (Melville, NY) and Boyd split time in goal. Mikelinich made three saves in the first half, while Boyd had seven in the second.

Vassar returns for their home opener on Wed. Feb. 27. The Brewers face Montclair State at 5 p.m. at Weinberg Field.
