CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Vassar College women's tennis team traveled to MIT for a matchup of nationally-ranked squads on Saturday afternoon. The No. 29 Brewers (2-2) played the No. 9 Engineers (1-0) tight, but ultimately dropped a 9-0 decision at the Carr Tennis Bubble.
After
Morgane Flournoy (Grosse Pointe, MI) and
Ashley Fair (Laguna Beach, CA) suffered a tight 8-6 loss to Ashley Teng and Vanessa Kitova at No. 3 doubles, Vassar's No. 2 tandem of
Sarra Yekta (Las Vegas, NV) and
Melina Stavropolous (Atherton, CA) fell to Marina Zhang and Megan Guenther by a score of 8-5. MIT completed the doubles sweep with Libby Rickeman and Lara Rakocevic's 8-2 win over
Frances Cornwall (Poway, CA) and
Tara Edwards (Littleton, CO) in the No. 1 position.
At No. 1 singles, Cornwall fell to Rickeman by a 6-2, 6-1 count. Zhang defeated Yekta 6-1, 6-3 in the No. 2 singles match, while No. 3 Edwards suffered a 6-0, 6-2 loss against Teng. In the No. 4 position, MIT's Rakocevic topped Stavropoulos, 6-1, 6-2. The Engineers earned identical 6-0, 6-1 victories and both No. 5 and No. 6 singles, with Amber Shen beating Flournoy in the No. 5 spot and Guenther topping
Joyce Park (Gig Harbor, WA) in the No. 6 matchup.
Next weekend, the Brewers host the final Seven Sisters Championship at Walker Field House. Vassar squares off with Bryn Mawr and Smith on Saturday before facing Mount Holyoke and Wellesley on Sunday.
