WILTON, N.Y. – The Vassar College men's tennis team began an eight-match road trip at Skidmore on Saturday afternoon.
Allen Sokolov (Woodland Hills, CA) picked up a win at No. 5 singles, but that would prove to be the Brewers' (3-2, 2-1 Liberty) only victory in an 8-1 loss to the 28
th-ranked Thoroughbreds (1-1, 1-0 Liberty) at the Wilton YMCA.
Sokolov, the reigning Liberty League Singles Performer of the Week, earned a 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 triumph over Connor Biernat. Skidmore won the remaining singles matches in straight sets, however. JT Wynne beat
David Gandham (Ann Arbor, MI) 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 1 position, while
Mathew Yee (Sha Ting, Hong Kong), Vassar's No. 2, fell to Jack McClaren by a 6-3, 6-0 count. After a tight first set at No. 3 singles, the Thoroughbreds' Travis Leaf registered a 6-4, 6-0 win over
Jamie Anderson (Constantine, KY). In the No. 4 singles match,
Adam Krueger (Bay Village,OH) suffered a 6-1, 6-2 loss to Suraj Mahtani.
Jeremy Auh (Scottsdale, AZ), meanwhile, dropped a 6-3, 6-2 decision to Tristian Thiebaut at No. 6 singles.
In doubles play, Sokolov and Auh suffered an 8-3 loss to Wynne and Mahtani in the No. 1 position, and the pair of
Mihajlo Ivanovic (Belgrade, Serbia) and Yee fell, 8-2, to McClaren and Jason Keye in the No. 3 spot. The No. 2 doubles match went to a tiebreaker before Noah Williamson and Leaf defeated Krueger and Gandham 8-7.
Vassar returns to action next Saturday with a 1 p.m. matchup at Clark (4-1).
