WEST POINT, N.Y. – On Saturday, the Vassar College women's tennis team took on Division I foe Army West Point in its first match of the spring season.
Frances Cornwall (Poway, CA) earned a straight-sets victory at No. 1 singles, and the doubles tandem of
Melina Stavropoulos (Atherton, CA) and
Sarra Yekta (Las Vegas, NV) also notched a win, but the Brewers (2-1) ultimately fell to the Black Knights (6-3) by a 6-1 count at the Lichtenberg Tennis Center.
Stavropoulos and Yekta played No. 2 doubles against Hannah Boubel and Sasha Inchauste and came away with a 7-6 triumph. However, the match was played under Division I rules where the three doubles matches count for a single point. And Army West Point won that point with victories in the No. 1 and 3 positions. Vassar's No. 1 team of Cornwall and
Tara Edwards (Littleton, CO) suffered a 6-2 defeat against Paola Bou and Genevieve McCormack. Alana Larcombe and Bridget Mayfield then secured the doubles point for the Black Knights with a 6-2 victory over
Ashley Fair (Laguna Beach, CA) and
Morgane Flournoy (Grosse Pointe, MI) in the No. 3 spot.
At No. 1 singles, Cornwall defeated Hannah Boubel by a score of 6-2, 6-3. That would prove to be Vassar's only singles victory, however. No. 2 Yekta fell, 6-2, 6-2 to Sam DiMaio, while Bao topped Edwards 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 3 position. In the No. 4 singles match, Army West Point's Mary Jo Pidgeon defeated Stavropoulos 6-2, 6-0. Gloria Son beat Flournoy 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 5 spot, and the Black Knights' Abi Waldman topped
Joyce Park (Gig Harbor, WA) 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6 singles.
The Brewers return to action next Saturday, when they visit MIT (0-0) at 1:30 p.m.
