POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – On Saturday afternoon, the Vassar College men's tennis team took on Rochester in its first match of the spring season. The match came down to No. 3 singles, where Tanmay Thakkar defeated
Jamie Anderson (Constantine, KY) in three sets to give the Yellowjackets (3-0) a 5-4 victory over the Brewers (2-1) at Walker Field House.
Rochester built an early lead by winning all three doubles matchups. The Yellowjackets' No. 1 tandem of Masaru Fujimaki and Charlie Fang defeated
Allen Sokolov (Woodland Hills, CA) and
Jeremy Auh (Scottsdale, AZ) by an 8-3 count, while
Nick Zuczek (Westerly, RI) and
Nicolas Demaria (New Hyde Park, NY) dropped an 8-4 decision to Sahaj Somani and Pasquale Procaccino in the No. 2 position. Rochester completed the doubles sweep with Tanmay Thakkar and Yifan Shen's 8-6 win over
Adam Krueger (Bay Village, OH) and Anderson in the No. 3 spot.
However, Vassar tied the match by earning four singles wins. Sokolov knocked off Procaccino 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5 singles, while Krueger notched a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Somani in the No. 4 position. At No. 6 singles, Auh registered a 6-1, 7-6 triumph against Mark Zolotukhin.
Mathew Yee (Sha Tin, Hong Kong), meanwhile, defeated Shen in three sets, 6-1, 2-6, 6-4, at No. 2 singles.
At No. 1 singles,
David Gandham (Ann Arbor, MI) fell to Fujimaki by a score of 6-2, 6-3, setting up the decisive No. 3 singles tilt. Anderson won the first set in a tiebreaker, while Thakkar took the second set 7-5, forcing a final set that would determine the match winner. Anderson had a 4-3 lead in the third set, but Thakkar rallied to win the final three games and the match, 6-7, 7-5, 6-4, securing the victory for the Yellowjackets.
Vassar (1-0 Liberty) returns to action on Sunday, when RIT (1-1, 0-0 Liberty) visits Walker Field House at 11 a.m.
