Brewers Fall In CUNYAC Vs. Cancer Tournament Championship Game

Bromfeld Named to All-Tournament Team

BRONX, N.Y. – The Vassar men's team fell 94-68 to Lehman in the CUNYAC vs. Cancer Championship game on Sunday evening. With the loss, Vassar falls to 3-6 overall, while Lehman moves to 6-5.

Vassar opened the game on a 7-0 run with senior Kyle Kappes (San Diego, CA) dropping a three-pointer 13 seconds in. First-year Avni Mustafaj (Yonkers, NY) accounted for the next five points before Lehman scored at 18:04 to cut the lead to 7-2. After that, the Lightning went on an 8-0 to pull ahead 10-7 at 16:33. The Brewers went on to retake the lead at 8:35, going up 30-24.

Lehman pushed the pass, outscoring Vassar 24-8 in the final eight minutes of the half. Junior Zach Bromfeld (Woodmere, NY) netted a pair of free throws in the last seconds to make it 38-48 at the break.   

Lehman started the second half on an 8-0 run before Bromfeld knocked down a mid-range jumper to break the streak. Vassar struggled to pull within single digits, but Zach Johnson (San Francisco, CA) cut the lead to 48-59 off a Joey Sacco (Ocean City, NJ). The Lightning went on to go up 81-55 at the 5:14 mark and continued to grow their lead for the eventual win.

Bromfeld led Vassar with his fourth double-double of the season behind 20 points and ten rebounds. He also made two blocks. Sophomore Neville Lee (Yonkers, NY) scored a season-high nine points, while Sacco had a career-high nine points as well. For his performance, Bromfeld earned all-tournament honors.

Lehman's Isaiah Geathers led all scorers with 28 points, while Tommy Batista had 21 points.

Vassar returns to action on Sat. Jan. 4 when they travel to face Connecticut College at 2 p.m.
