Overtime Goal Sends Brewers To Liberty League Championship Game

Palma nets game-winner at 69th minute

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Senior Stephanie Palma (Manhasset, NY) redirected a Cristina Lopez (Timonium, MD) shot attempt nine minutes into overtime to give the Brewers a 2-1 victory over Skidmore on Wednesday. Vassar now has a chance a chance to defend their Liberty League title in Saturday's championship game against Rochester.

It was not until the final three minutes of regulation that either side found the back of the net in an otherwise defensive contest. The Thoroughbreds struck at 57:01 when Sarah Winters collected the rebound in traffic near the Vassar goal. She then connected for the score, giving Skidmore the 1-0 lead.

Vassar recomposed quickly, evening the game 45 seconds later. The Brewers drew the penalty corner with Palma inserted. She darted the pass to Rylie Pope (San Diego, CA) where she fired off her trademark shot from the top of the circle. The ball popped past the defense and into the net.

Fans were treated to a thrilling overtime. Both sides had chances, but Vassar outshot Skidmore 6-2 down the stretch. After two shots from Palma, Skidmore recollected possession and rattled off a quick shot on goal. Goalkeeper Jules Smith (Mullica, NJ) kept the score 1-1, turning the Sofia Marshall shot away soon after. Sophomore Sophie McGrath (Yarmouth, ME) nearly scored after causing and turnover and breaking away down the midfield. She almost got through, but the Thoroughbreds defense collapsed on her before an attempt.

With under a minute to play, Palma paced the offense with two more shots on goal. Vassar then drew the foul for the corner attempt. The pass was positioned to Lopez who shot from the top, left of the circle. Palma then redirected the high ball into the net for the golden goal victory.

Vassar defense picked up two defensive saves from Ally Aquilina-Piscitello (Lexington, MA) and Lopez, while Smith made seven stops in goal. Skidmore's Maddy Carre tallied four saves with Sofia Marshall tacking on two defensive saves.

The Brewers now travel to Rochester on Saturday at 1 p.m. for the Liberty League Championship game.
