ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Brewers defense held off a relentless Yellowjackets' attack, but Rochester came up with the 1-0 victory on Saturday's Liberty League Championship game. Rochester scored late in the third quarter behind a goal from Emma Schlechter.
Most of the early action took place in the Brewers' territory. Rochester took two penalty corners in the first two minutes and Maya Haigis found an open shot. Junior
Ally Aquilina-Piscitello (Lexington, MA) stretched out in front of the net and swept the ball away for her 13
th defensive save of the season. The Yellowjackets rattled off two more shots on goal four minutes later, but goalkeeper
Jules Smith (Mullica Hill, NJ) swatted them off. Â Â
Smith kept the first half scoreless, recording four more saves in the second quarter. Vassar's best chance came off a corner at the 34
th minute of the third.
Grace Yacura (Ashburn, VA) set the ball to
Rylie Pope (San Diego, CA) who shot to goal. The Brewers scrambled to get the ball past, but goalkeeper Kate Kujawa prevented anything from developing.
Rochester regained possession and a penalty corner led to another save from Smith and a defensive save by
Cristina Lopez (Timonium, MD). Following, the Yellowjackets drew another corner and were able to capitalize. Schlecther took the ball from Colleen Maillie and chipped the ball in from four-yards out on the left wing.
The fourth was all defense with not a single shot or corner taken, which prevented any late Vassar comeback.
Smith had a strong day in goal, finishing with seven saves. Rochester's Kujawa had one save. Schlecther was also named the tournament MVP.
