POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Vassar women's soccer team clinched the third seed in the Liberty League Tournament following their season finale 3-1 win over No. 22 RIT on Saturday afternoon.
Ashley Ferry (Westfield, NJ) netted the opening goal at the 37
th minute and then
Emma Tanner (Florence, MA) scored again at the 57
th mark.
With the win, the Brewers move to 9-7-1 and 6-3-0 in the Liberty League. RIT drops to 11-4-2 overall and 6-2-1 in the conference.
Vassar played aggressive in the first half, outshooting the Tigers 11-5. Senior
Kai Greenlees (Evanston, IL) made the opening attempt at 2:53, but the RIT goalkeeper blocked the shot away. The Brewers kept the pressure on the Tigers' defense, taking three more shots on goal. They finally broke through Tanner made the long pass to Ferry on the top, right side of the box. Ferry then shot past the goalkeeper for the opening score.
RIT would respond before halftime when Jordyn Turner made the cross to Kayla Grossman at the top of the box. Grossman then launched the shot into the upper left corner of the net.
The Brewers remained up-tempo at the start of the second with early shots from Tanner and
Emily Longo (Westborough, MA). At the 57
th minute,
Emma Trasatti (Berlin, NJ) came in from the right side and crossed a pass in front of the net. RIT's goalkeeper got a hand on it, but the ball went straight to Tanner who deflected the shot back in to go up 2-1.
The final score came off a Tigers' own goal at 78:28.
Senior
Camelia Manring (Indianapolis, IN) started the first half in goal, and
Fiona Walsh (Hackettstown, NJ) played the second where she made six saves. Seniors Greenlees, Manring,
Savannah Cutler (Deer Park, TX),
Jordan Moss (Tustin, CA) were honored in their final regular season home game as well.
The Brewers continue their season by hosting Union in the first round of the Liberty League Tournament on Tues. Nov. 5 at Gordon Field. Game is expected to start at 2 p.m.
