POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – Junior midfielder
Skylar Herrera-Ross scored in the opening half and that goal stood to lift third-seeded Vassar College to a 1-0 win over sixth-seeded Union College in Liberty League Women's Soccer First Round action. With the win, the Brewers improve to 10-7-1, while the Dutchwomen conclude their season at 10-6-1.
The Brewers advance to the Liberty League Tournament Semifinals to face second-seeded RIT. That game will be played at 1:30pm on Saturday on the campus of top-seeded William Smith. It marks the fifth Semifinals appearance for Vassar, who played in 2017, advancing to the championship game.
Vassar opened the game's scoring in the 16th minute after
Skylar Herrera-Ross (Alameda, CA) headed the ball into an open right side of the net. The play began on the left side of the field as sophomore midfielder
Emma Tanner (Florence, MA) fired a shot in that banked off the crossbar and out to Herrera-Ross for the open net.
In the second half of action, the Dutchwomen came out dominant, holding a 9-5 shot advantage. Freshman forward Ryan Conway (East Islip, NY) had a strong chance to open the half after she knocked a header in on net that was saved by junior goalie
Fiona Walsh (Hackettstown, NJ).
The Dutchwomen had another opportunity mid-way through the half, but Walsh once again proved strong in net as she out dueled a Union defender, kicking the ball out of danger and into the midfield.
Senior forward Linsey Giles (Bedford, MA) also had a solid attempt for the visitors, but once again, Walsh was there to scoop save her long shot in on goal.
The Brewers held tough toward the end of the match, sending the ball out on long passes to dwindle down the clock and secure the First Round victory.
Walsh posted all four of her saves in the second half of action, moving to 10-7-1 on the year. For Union, junior Alison Sorkenn (River Edge, NJ) notched six saves in the defeat.
