POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - It was a tough season opener for the Vassar College men's squash team, which shouldered losses to Fordham University and Northeastern University to kickoff the 2019-20 campaign. The Brewers fell to the Rams, 7-2, before shouldering a 6-3 loss to the Huskies.
In the opener against Fordham, VC saw its two victories come at the top of the ladder as rookie
Sameer Mustafa (Dublin, CA) notched a 3-1 win over the Rams' William Douglass from No. 1. Locked in a 1-1 battle, Mustafa battled back with third and fourth game wins for the 11-7, 10-12, 11-6, 13-11 match victory.
From two, senior captain
Viraj Nadkarni (Mumbai, India) gutted out a 3-2 win over Patrick Rodden. Trailing 2-0, Nadkarni won the next two and claimed the fifth game for the 4-11, 9-11, 11-1, 11-7, 11-2 come-from-behind victory.
The visiting Rams powered their way to victory in the other seven spots on the ladder, including five 3-0 wins.
In the second match of the day, VC shouldered tough losses in the first four spots on the ladder, but came on strong in the middle matches. Freshman
Matthew Hein (Cos Cob, CT) earned a 3-1 win over Rohin Agrawal from five, battling back from a second game loss to win 11-5, 7-11, 11-8, 11-9.
At six, sophomore
Alexander Wisneski (Mechanicsburg, PA) won by retirement over Snider Amazan, who was unable to finish after Wisneski earned 11-5, 11-5 wins through the first two games. Sophomore
Reese Collins (Bedford, NH) posted the Brewers final win of the day, besting Vanel Joseph at seven by a 3-0 score, gutting out a 12-10, 11-9, 11-8 margin of victory.
Vassar is right back in action on Sunday when they face Lafayette College at 10:30am at the Kenyon Hall Squash Courts.
