POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Vassar men's soccer team (5-5-1) dropped their first Liberty League match of the season on Saturday against Skidmore (5-3-2), 2-0. The loss drops the Brewers to 2-1-0 in the conference, while the Thoroughbreds pick up their first league win and move to 1-3-0.
Vassar's offense was steady in the first half, firing off seven shots to just three for the Thoroughbreds. It was the visitors getting on the board first though when at the 15
th minute Skidmore's Stanley Langyintuo fired the shot into the upper left of the net from inside the box. The Brewers had a few chances near the end of the half after shots from
Kyle Lopes (El Dorado Hills, CA) and
Andrew Goldsmith (Princeton, NJ) took chances on goal. Skidmore's Sebastian Bosch was there to deflect both attempts and kept it 1-0 heading into halftime.
The Thoroughbreds controlled possession in the second and only gave up three Brewers' shots. After a Skidmore yellow card at 81:50,
Owen Fauth (Keene, NH) nearly capitalized on the free kick attempt, but Bosch was there again for the stop. Unfortunately for Vassar, Langyintuo stole the ball in the midfield and broke through the Brewers' defense with 10 seconds remaining. He was then able to chip the ball in five yards out for his second goal of the day.
Freshman
Eric Wnorowski (Mantoloking, NJ) started in goal for the second straight game and made four saves. Bosch also had four saves in the shutout.
The Brewers look to get back in the win column when they travel to Liberty League foe Hobart on Sat. Oct. 12 next. Game is set to start at 3 p.m.
