Yellowjackets Edge Brewers In Overtime Shootout

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The rematch of last year's Liberty League Championship game lived up to expectations, but it was Rochester coming away with the shootout win over Vassar on Sunday afternoon. The Yellowjackets went 3-0 in the shootout after a scoreless game to pick up the 1-0 conference win. Vassar now slips to 11-3 overall and 3-2 in the conference, while Rochester moves to 11-5 and 4-1 in the Liberty League.

Both sides had chances throughout the game, but stellar backlines limited passing lines and clear shot attempts. Rochester put the pressure on early in the first after five straight penalty corner attempts. Goalkeeper Jules Smith (Mullica Hill, NJ) deflected two of the shots, while Ally Aquilina-Piscitello (Lexington, MA) swatted the ball after a Maya Haigis attempt for her tenth defensive save of the season. That total puts Aquilina-Piscitello third most in a season in program history.

Vassar broke out of their own territory soon after. Rylie Pope (San Diego, CA) rattled off two quick shots at the 10th minute, but Rochester goalkeeper Kate Kujawa made the stop.
Shots remained fairly even in the first half, with Vassar holding a slight 7-6 advantage. After the break, the Yellowjackets came out strong, only allowing one Brewers shot compared to their eight in the second half. Vassar's backline held and Smith was able to turn aside all three that were on goal.

With the game scoreless, overtime suggested more offensive opportunities with the open field. Sam Plante (Watertown, MA) launched the shot off an early Grace Amell (West Hartford, CT) penalty corner, but it was blocked by a defender. No one could break thorough the others defense and the shootout was needed to determine the winner.

Rochester scored in their first three stroke-offs. The Brewers were not as fortunate and Kujawa locked down on each attempt, not allowing a single score.

Vassar returns home on Fri. Oct. 25 to host St. Lawrence at 2 p.m.
