Box Score POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Five different players scored in No. 14 Vassar field conference victory over St. Lawrence on Friday afternoon. The Brewers only led 1-0 at halftime, but three third-quarter goals pulled the team away for the 5-2 victory. With the win, Vassar moves to 12-3 overall and 4-2 in the Liberty League, while the Saints drop to 4-11 and 1-5.
Vassar got on the board midway through the first quarter when
Sam Plante (Watertown, MA) broke away from the Saints' defense. She ran into the top right of the circle and fired the ball into the left corner.
Grace Amell (West Hartford, CT) then chipped it in.
In a scoreless second, the Brewers outshot St. Lawrence 9-5 and had a 5-2 corner advantage.
Rylie Pope took two early shots on goal, but goalkeeper Sydney Giacin deflected both away. Near the end of the half, the Saints rattled off five shots in two minutes with goalkeeper
Jules Smith (Mullica Hill, NJ) making two saves.
Ally Aquilina-Piscitello (Lexington, MA) and
Nikki Pallotta (Clarence, NY) blocked up the Saints' shooting lanes as well, each tacking on a defensive save.
After the break, St. Lawrence tied the game after a miscommunication by the Vassar defense that led to Mckenzie Haberl taking the wide-open attempt from six-yards out. The Saints nearly scored 40 seconds later, but Smith knocked it away. The Brewers responded at the 31
st minute when Pope scooped up the ball in front of the St. Lawrence goal. She then chipped the ball in from three-yards away.
Vassar continued to control the action for the remainder of the third. At 39:38,
Stephanie Palma (Manhasset, NY) inserted the ball to
Cristina Lopez (Timonium, MD) at the top of the circle. Palma positioned herself in front of the Saints' goal and after Lopez shot, Palma was able to redirect the ball for the score. The Brewers scored again a minute later when
Ella Pearl (San Francisco, CA) flicked the ball to Lopez on the left inside of the circle. Lopez then slipped the attempt through the defense to go up 4-1.
The Saints scored early in the fourth, but Vassar would pull away with their fifth goal at 55:33.
Niki Rizzo (Andover, NJ) took a shot that was deflected by Giacin.
Sam Kass (Ann Arbor, MI) then took the rebound and snuck the ball between the post and goalkeeper's leg for the final score.
All three Vassar goalkeepers got in on the action today. Smith started and grabs her seventh win of the season while making four saves.
Liz Rotolo (Lebanon, NJ) tallied three saves and
Madison Maguire (North Kingstown, RI) closed the game out. Giacin made five saves for the Saints.
The Brewers close Liberty League play at Skidmore on Sun. Oct. 27 at 1 p.m.
