Men's Soccer Rallies Past St. Lawrence, 2-1

Brewers score in the 77th minute for Liberty League win over Saints

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 18, 2019) – Sophomore defender Garrett Lusk (Arlington, VA) scored in the 77th minute to lift Vassar College past St. Lawrence University, 2-1, in Liberty League action on Friday evening. The win moves the Brewers to 6-6-1 with a 3-2-0 mark in conference play. The Saints are now 4-7-1 with a 1-4-1 record in the Liberty League.

Locked in a 1-1 battle with less than 20 minutes remaining, Vassar earned a corner kick with sophomore midfielder Eamon Geraghty (Oneonta, NY), sending the ball into the midfield on the right end. Junior forward Jonathan Bow (San Francisco, CA) got a touch on it as it caromed off a Saints defender and back out into play. Lusk was there, flying in to bury the ball into the left corner past the diving SLU keeper.

Despite several tries late, the Saints could not solve Vassar keeper Eric Wnorowski (Mantoloking, NJ) again as he held on for the Brewers victory.

Vassar struck first in the opening half as senior defender Henrick Olsson (Tokyo, Japan) notched his second goal of the season in the 16th minute. Off a throw-in from sophomore defender Garrett Lusk (Arlington, VA), the ball was corralled by junior defender Austin Lukasik (Jupiter, FL). He sent a long high cross from left to the right side, where Olsson was there to outpace a defender and fire the ball in past Saints' goalie Ben Woelfinger (Bad Homburg, Hessen, Germany).

Despite a solid effort from the Vassar, who maintained possession heavily throughout the first half, the Saints answered in the 44th minute on a strike by freshman midfielder Marvin Sibanda (Bulawayo, Zimbabwe). As the ball came into the Vassar zone, a Brewers defender headed the ball back to midfield.

The effort came up short as Sibanda was there to grab the rebound, carrying it up into the box for a left-to-right shot into the corner past a diving Eric Wnorowski (Mantoloking, NJ).

Vassar owned a 12-6 advantage in shots for the contest, including a narrow 5-4 margin on goal. The Brewers also had a 7-5 edge in corner kicks.

Both teams return to action on Saturday at 2pm for another Liberty League match-up. Vassar hosts Clarkson, while St. Lawrence heads to Bard.
