POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 1, 2019) - Powered by a five-point night from senior midfielder
Savannah Cutler, the Vassar College women's soccer team defeated Bard College, 5-1 in Liberty League action at Gordon Field. The win moves the Brewers to 5-4-1 overall with a 2-0-0 mark in league play. The Raptors are now 3-7-1 and 0-3-0 in the Liberty League.
Vassar, which owned a 23-7 edge in shots for the game, struck first in the opening half as Cutler (Deer Park, TX) scored off her own corner kick in the 25th minute. Her shot curved in, took a bounce off the right post and caromed in for the tally. The Brewers second tally came less than five minutes later as Cutler sent a short pass across the top of the box where freshman midfielder
Violet Munnelly (Valley Cottage, NY) sailed it into the right corner for the 2-0 advantage.
Freshman
Sydney MacDonald (Hopkinton, MA) then pushed the home team lead to 3-0 in the 36th minute. Off a Brewers corner, the ball sailed into traffic and was misdirected off the foot of a Bard defender in front. MacDonald was there on the middle left to fire it home.
Bard broke through onto the scoreboard in the 40th minute off a nice give-and-go from freshman midfielder Abby Frazier (Beaverton, OR). Feeding the ball down the middle right, she sent a pass up ahead to classmate Gillian Randall (New York, NY), who dribbled in before faking left on the Vassar goalie for the left side open goal.
Second half action opened much like the first as Cutler netted her second of the contest in the 52nd minute. MacDonald carried the ball into the zone and fed a cross up to Cutler. Dribbling slightly around a defender, Cutler sent it into the upper left corner for the 4-1 edge.
The scoring concluded for both sides in the 83rd minute as senior defender
Jordan Moss (Tustin, CA) scored up front in traffic. Off a Brewers' corner, the ball sailed in and was headed by sophomore midfielder
Gabi Tulk (Chicago, IL). The saved ball rebounded out to Moss, who was able to make a diving kick pass the Bard goalie into the right corner.
Vassar, which owned a 13-7 edge in shots on goal, saw junior goalie
Fiona Walsh (Hackettstown, NJ) record five saves over 66:51 minutes of action. Senior
Camelia Manring (Indianapolis, IN) came on in relief, recording one stop in 23:09. For Bard, junior Abigail Stanley (St. Petersburg, FL) recorded eight saves on the evening.
Both squads continue Liberty League play on Saturday as Vassar travels to Skidmore at 2pm, while Bard hosts RIT at 1pm.
