Brewers Dominate Bard Behind Strong Second Half

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Every Vassar women's basketball player scored in the blowout win over Bard on Saturday afternoon. The Brewers won their 12th straight game, 72-30, over the visiting Raptors at the AFC.

With the win, Vassar moves to 15-2 and 9-1 in the Liberty League. Meanwhile, Bard drops to 4-10 overall and 0-9 in the conference.

Vassar led the entire contest and sprung out to a 6-0 lead in the first before Bard got on the board. The Raptors hit a pair of free throws at 7:00, but then Ryan DeOrio (Collegeville, PA) scored the next seven Vassar points to push the advantage to 13-6. In the second quarter, Skylar Schmid (Natick, MA) made the score 20-8, and then Dani Douglas (Kalispell, MT) drained a three to keep the Brewers rolling. Bard benefited from the foul line, with eight of their points coming from free throws in the first half. As a result, the Raptors made the game 27-16 at halftime.

Vassar went off in the third, outscoring the Raptors 25-2 in the quarter. Maddie Leong (Atascadero, CA) sank a jumper off a DeOrio feed to open the half, and then Jackie Cenan made two-straight layups to put Vassar up 33-16. By the end of the third, the Brewers led by 34. Vassar did not let up in the fourth, leading by as much as 42. At 7:21, Julia Roellke (Poughkeepsie, NY) intercepted a Bard passing lane, and then broke away for the easy layup. Schmid closed the game with the final basket with under a minute to play, as the Brewers eased into the final buzzer.

Cenan led the squad with 14 points, while Sophie Nick (Denver, CO) had 11. Natalie Pettirossi (Weston, MA) grabbed a career-high 11 boards. Sarah Gillooly (Stow, MA) dished out her career-best seven assists. As a team, the Vassar defense had 16 steals and caused 26 turnovers.   

For Bard, Christina Kiser had a team-high 14 points. Katie Esposito led the Raptors with nine rebounds.

Vassar is back on Friday evening at the AFC to face St. Lawrence. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m.
