Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Seff Scores 1,000th Point In Loss to Bard

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – With a three-pointer midway through the second half of Saturday afternoon's game against Bard, Alex Seff (Arlington, VA) became the 16th player in Vassar College men's basketball program history to score 1,000 career points.  He ended up with a team-high 18 points, but it wasn't enough for the Brewers (7-10, 3-7 Liberty), who suffered a 73-67 loss to the Raptors (9-7, 5-4 Liberty) at the Athletic & Fitness Center.

Seff entered the contest needing 12 points to reach the milestone, and he got there when Zach Bromfeld (Woodmere, NY) hit him for a pull-up trey from the top of the key with 9:18 remaining in the contest.  That triple came in the midst of a 14-4 run that trimmed an 11-point deficit to one, 56-55.  However, Bard responded with eight straight points to bring the margin back to nine, 64-55, before closing out the six-point victory.

Four Brewers reached double-figures in the scoring column.  Chris Gallivan (East Walpole, MA) had career-highs in scoring (12) and rebounding (10) for his first career double-double.  Bromfeld finished with 18 points, six rebounds and four assists, while Paul Grinde (Virginia Beach, VA) posted 10 points and six boards.  Vassar shot 40 percent (28-of-70) from the field and outrebounded Bard 41-37.  The Brewers went 8-for-26 (30.8 percent) from downtown and 3-for-8 (37.5 percent) at the charity stripe.

Vassar scored the first seven points of the game, but the Raptors immediately countered with seven points of their own.  After the teams traded baskets, a Bromfeld layup at the 15:41 mark of the first half sparked an 18-8 run that gave the Brewers a 10-point lead, 27-17, with 7:19 left before halftime.  Bard again rallied to tie it at 33-33 late in the half before a Grinde layup put Vassar up 35-33 at the break.

The Raptors began the second half with a 12-0 spurt and opened up their largest lead of the game, a 52-41 cushion, with 13:25 remaining.  A Hugh Durham (Savannah, GA) layup started the Vassar comeback effort, though, and Bromfeld's layup at the 8:44 mark capped the 14-4 spurt that trimmed the margin to one.  Justyn Rogers hit a three on the other end, though, as Bard pulled away for the win.

Rogers paced the Raptors with 21 points and eight rebounds.  He also dished out three assists.  David Runcie contributed 15 points and four assists, while Zack Jacobs and Alijah Rue tallied 10 points apiece.  Rue added four assists and three steals.  Jelani Bell-Isaac, meanwhile, recorded eight points and eight boards.  Bard shot 48.3 percent (28-of-58) from the floor, 28.6 percent (6-of-21) from long range, and 68.8 percent (11-of-16) at the free throw line.

After playing five times in eight days, the Brewers are now off until Friday, when they continue their seven-game homestand with a 7 p.m. matchup against first-place St. Lawrence (10-5, 7-1 Liberty).  The Saints earned a 70-62 win over Vassar when the teams squared off on Jan. 5.
