Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Vassar Posts Wire-to-Wire Win Over First-Place St. Lawrence

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – For the second time in 10 days, the Vassar College men's basketball team upset the Liberty League leaders on Friday night.  The Brewers, who knocked off Skidmore on Jan. 15, controlled Friday night's matchup with St. Lawrence from the start.  Vassar (8-10, 4-7 Liberty) forced a shot clock violation on the opening possession and led the entire way, snapping its two-game losing streak with a 70-49 triumph over the first-place Saints (11-6, 8-2 Liberty).

"Our guys were able to find different ways to attack them (St. Lawrence)," Head Coach Ryan Mee said.  "We executed the game plan and made shots.  That's a huge difference.  We didn't make shots (when we played them) up there."

After the game-opening shot clock violation, the Brewers capped their first possession with an Alex Seff (Arlington, VA) three-pointer.  Mason Dyslin (Yorktown Heights, NY) and Paul Grinde (Virginia Beach, VA) added buckets to make it 7-0 before another Seff trey extended the margin to eight points at 10-2.

A three-pointer by Luke Hicks brought the Saints within five, 23-18, at the 4:29 mark, but Vassar ended the first half on a 9-3 spurt.  Seff hit two threes during that span, and Chris Gallivan (East Walpole, MA) contributed another, as the Brewers took a 32-21 advantage into the locker room.

In the second half, Vassar continued to pour it on, increasing its cushion to a game-high 26 points when a Seff trey made it 53-27 with 10:34 remaining.  The Saints responded with a 21-10 spurt to get back within 13 at 63-48, but it would get no closer.  Vassar scored seven of the final eight points to finish off the 70-49 victory, its first over St. Lawrence since Feb. 21, 2014, a span of nine games.

"We like playing at home," Mee said.  "Our guys were focused and prepared.  It's fun to execute and play well together."

Seff drained five treys and finished with a game-high 17 points.  Zach Bromfeld (Woodmere, NY), meanwhile, posted his third double-double of the season (and first since Dec. 8) with 16 points and 10 rebounds.  He also registered three blocks.  Grinde added 16 points of his own to go along with six boards, five assists and two blocks.  Dyslin handed out three assists, and Steve Palecki (Southborough, MA) tallied a career-high three blocks.  The Brewers outrebounded St. Lawrence 40-32 and had a 9-1 edge in blocks.  Vassar shot 56.8 percent (25-of-44) from the floor, 47.1 percent (8-of-17) from downtown, and 75 percent (12-of-16) at the free throw line.

Brandon Arnold paced the Saints with 10 points, while Hicks tallied nine points and four rebounds.  Ben Crawford grabbed nine boards to go along with seven points, and Christopher Jeffrey handed out three assists.  As a team, St. Lawrence shot just 25.8 percent (17-of-66) from the field, including 26.3 percent (5-of-19) from three-point range.  The Saints were 10-for-16 (62.5 percent) at the charity stripe.

Vassar concludes its seven-game homestand with a 4 p.m. matchup against Clarkson (3-13, 2-7 Liberty) on Saturday.  At 10 a.m., the Brewers will hold their annual alumni game.
