POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Junior
Sophie Nick (Denver, CO) tallied her eighth double-double of the season as the Brewers outlasted the Dutchwomen for their 11
th-straight win. Union's league-leading defense was outrebounded 48-28 in the 64-50 Vassar win.
With the win, Vassar moves to 14-2 and 7-1 in the Liberty League, while Union slips to 10-4 and 5-3 in the league.
Nick led the Brewers with 24 points on 10-of-21 shooting, making it her third 20-plus point game of the season. She also grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds, five of which were offensive boards.
Isa Peczuh (Willington, CT) added 13 points behind three triples, while
Jackie Cenan (Laguna Beach, CA) added eight points.
The first half started with both teams trading baskets after Vassar jumped out to a 7-2 lead. After Union hit a three at 4:41, the Dutchwomen went up 11-9, but a Peczuh triple let Vassar retook the lead and they never gave it up afterwards. A
Ryan DeOrio (Collegeville, PA) triple put Vassar up by 12, 31-19, in the second quarter, but Union began to chip back in following halftime.
The Dutchwomen made it a single-digit game throughout the third, but the Brewers kept Union at bay any time a potential run was in the works. Two jump shots from Darby Leid and Irelee Ferguson pulled Union back in, but Nick answered both with two jumpers of her own.
Six total baskets were made in the opening two minutes of the final quarter, in a back-and-forth succession of events. Union seemed to break through after a 6-2 run that cut the lead to three at 53-50. The Brewers stayed cool and closed the game on a 10-0 run behind scores from Cenan, Nick, Peczuh and
Sarah Gillooly (Stow, MA).Â
Defensively, the Brewers limited the Dutchwomen to three assists while causing eight turnovers. Cenan held Union's top offensive player to six points as well.
Maddie Leong (Atascadero, CA) had eight boards, while Peczuh had six.
Leid led the Dutchwomen with 12 points, and Nicole Conley had a team-high eight rebounds.
Vassar faces nearby rival Bard tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m at the AFC.
