POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Vassar women's basketball team (12-2, 6-1 Liberty) set the program record for the longest winning streak with a victory over RIT (8-5, 3-4 Liberty) on Saturday afternoon. The Brewers downed the Tigers 74-66 behind junior
Jackie Cenan's (Laguna Beach, CA) new career-high 30 points.
Â
In one of the seemingly closer games this season, there were six lead changes with RIT. Cenan scored the first five points for Vassar, making the opening layup and knocking a triple soon after. Teams traded baskets throughout the first, but a
Dani Douglas (Kalispell, MT) trey at 3:12 let the Brewers open up.
Ryan DeOrio (Collegeville, PA) then sank a three to put Vassar up 27-21 at the quarter break.
Â
RIT cut the lead to four early in the second quarter before a jumper by
Sarah Gillooly started an 8-2 run. Cenan made a basket at 6:06 to push the lead to 11, and then a trey from
Isa Peczuh (Willington, CT) gave Vassar its largest lead at 14. Before halftime, Cenan made another three, but a pair of RIT free throws lessened the lead to 46-35 at the break.
Â
The Tigers made a strong push in the third quarter, outscoring Vassar 25-13 and pulling within one point with 42 seconds remaining. A buzzer-beater jumper by Brooke Stanley then gave RIT a 60-59 lead heading into the fourth.
Â
Cenan then took over in the final stretch, accounting for 14 of Vassar's 15 points in the fourth quarter. She hit her fourth three to give Vassar a 62-60 lead that the Brewers did not give up. Cenan finished the game shooting 12-of-15 and 4-of-4 from three-point range. The Brewer defense shutdown the Tigers as well, limiting them to only six points in the fourth.
Â
Cenan picked up her second double-double of the season with 10 rebounds. She had six assists, two steals and a block.
Sophie Nick (Denver, CO) recorded her seventh season double-double behind 12 points and 11 boards. Peczuh chipped on nine points, while DeOrio added eight.
Maddie Leong (Atascadero, CA) dished out a career-high six assists. Douglas scored nine points behind a perfect 3-of-3 from three-point range.
Â
Stanley led RIT with 19 points, while Sabrina Wolfe had 18. Alyssa Juergens grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds.
Â
Vassar is back in Liberty League action on Tues. Jan 15 to face Skidmore (4-9, 3-3 Liberty). Tip-off is set for 5 p.m. at the Athletics & Fitness Center in Poughkeepsie.
