DANBURY, CT – Living up to their national ranking, the No. 20 Vassar field hockey continued their four-game road trip with a dominant 2-0 win over Western Connecticut State on Wednesday afternoon.
With the win, Vassar moves to 4-1, while Western Connecticut falls to 2-3.
The Brewers recorded 32 shots in the game, while Western Connecticut was unable to slip one past the Vassar defense.
Sam Plante (Watertown, MA) tried to set up the Brewers' offense early, taking five shots in the first ten minutes of play. The Colonials' goalkeeper Neve Manion held stout, making nine saves in the first half.
Eventually the defense broke. Vassar kept the heat up, and the team scored at the 38
th minute when
Emily Poehlein (Northampton, MA) Â netted a goal off a Manion deflection. Â
With time winding down, Poehlein secured the win after receiving a pass from
Megan Caveny (Cicero, NY) at the top of the arc and launching the shot into goal.
Liz Rotolo (Lebanon, NJ) picked up her second shutout of the season along with the victory, and as a team, the Brewers held a 16-1 penalty corner advantage. Â
Vassar faces one more road game before coming home. The Brewers travel to Rampo on Sept. 15 for a 4 p.m. game.
