Poughkeepsie, NY – On an uncomfortablly hot and humid day, the Vassar men's soccer team persevered against the elements and a challenging opponent. Defenses played tough and tensions were high, but a late first half goal upheld the Brewers (3-0-0) for the 1-0 victory over Manhattanville (1-1-0) at Gordon Field.
Physical defenses on both sides set the tone early, with neither team registering a shot until the ninth minute of play. Momentum began to shift at the 41:04 mark when forward
Mattie Mrlik (San Francisco, CA) was awarded the throw in and found
Tyler Gilmore (Coronado, CA) in front of the net. Gilmore headed the long toss conveniently to
Quinn Tunnell (Hershey, PA) who tapped it in from the back post.
Temperatures slightly dipped in the second, but the Vassar offense began to heat up, outshooting Manhattanville 15-6. The Brewers kept the pressure, coming close to scoring off a
Kevin Baliat (Eldoret, Kenya) bicycle kick at the 37
th minute. Attempting to make a late comeback, Manhattanville believed to have scored at 56:49, but an offside call pulled the goal.
In an intense final minute, the Valiants went made one last push when Daniel Lombardo broke through the Brewers' defense and headed the ball with less than three seconds remaining. Goalkeeper
Will Marment (Stamford, CT) was all there was left to beat, but the junior read the attempt and came up with the save.
Marment recorded two saves while splitting time with
Luke Lefeber (Hoboken, NJ), who made three. Mrlik has accounted for at least a point in every game this season, while Tunnell recorded his second-consecutive goal. Â
Vassar returns to action on Sept. 8 at 4 p.m. against Stevens for the second game of their three-game home stand.
