POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Vassar College men's soccer team moved to 3-0 in Liberty League action with a 1-0 victory over Union (3-6-0, 0-2 Liberty) on Wednesday afternoon.
Will Marment (Stamford, CT) registered his fourth shutout of the season and seventh overall for the Brewers this season. The sophomore played the full 90 minutes in cage, picking up three saves. The back line in front of him played strong all game, allowing just seven total shots.
"It was a great effort," said head coach
Andy Jennings. "We didn't connect the way we have done in the past, but it's great when a team doesn't play as well as normal and still wins. That's the important thing."
The Brewers held the advantage on paper at 19 total shots with nine being on goal. Vassar also had nine corners in the game while giving up just three.
After starting in the second half,
Jonathan Bow (San Francisco, CA) finally broke through the Union defense three minutes into the half.
Hawkins Barratt Heitmann (Cutchogue, NY) picked up Bow sneaking behind the defense and he was then able to flick the kick into the left side of net.
The game remained physical until the end with a close call when a Union player broke up the Vassar clear attempt. Marment stayed active and scooped up the ball before it could slide in though.
The Brewers face a three-game Liberty League road trip starting on Sat. Oct. 6 when they head to Skidmore for a 2 p.m. showing.
