SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – In a gritty battle with Liberty League foe Skidmore (6-2-3, 2-1-1 Liberty), freshman
Quinn Tunnell (Hershey, PA) rose to the occasion in the 1-0 double overtime victory on Saturday afternoon. Tunnell scored the game-winning goal at the 109
th minute of play to secure the win and keep Vassar (8-2, 4-0 Liberty) undefeated in league play.
A total of seven yellow cards and 36 fouls were issued in one of the most physical games of the season, but that did not mean offenses were struggling. Thirty-one shots were taken between the teams, with Vassar holding the 20-11 advantage for the day.
Skidmore's Mike Park took the opening shot a minute in and
Kevin Baliat (Eldoret, Kenya) answered soon after. Teams traded shots, with Vassar managing three on goal that were all saved by Sebastian Bosch.
The Thoroughbreds' lone goal attempt came from Ben Zieff on the far right corner, but
Will Marment (Stamford, CT) was there to scoop it up.
The second half proved to be more balanced. Skidmore picked up their offense, holding a 6-2 corner advantage while taking eight shots. At the 59
th minute, the Brewers had a chance to take the lead after a Thoroughbreds' yellow card issued a
Mattie Mrlik (San Francisco, CA) penalty kick. Mrilk launched the shot, but Bosch was there for the save. Both defenses held strong, and a final second header by
Hawkins Barratt Heitmann (Cutchogue, NY) went just wide as the teams headed into overtime.
Vassar controlled the first overtime period by not allowing a single Skidmore shot and took three. Baliat managed a shot 30 seconds in from the right wing that was again saved, and
Austin Lukasik (Jupiter, FL) made an attempt at the 98
th minute that the goalkeeper read.
In the final overtime only one shot was taken and that was all that was needed. With less than 11 seconds in regulation, Heitmann lined up the quick corner. The sophomore kicked the ball to Tunnell who slipped past the goalie on the left side for the game winner.
The Brewers pick up their eighth shutout of the season, and Marment records his fifth of the season. The junior also made four saves.
Vassar returns to action on Fri. Oct. 12 to face Clarkson at 4 p.m. in Potsdam, NY.
