POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Despite a steady rain throughout the morning, the skies cleared in the afternoon, allowing the Vassar College women's tennis team to play its match against Liberty League rival Bard outdoors on the Josselyn Tennis Courts as scheduled. And the Brewers (1-0, 1-0 Liberty) enjoyed the fresh air, rolling to a 9-0 victory over the Raptors (4-1, 0-1 Liberty) on Friday afternoon.
Melina Stavropoulos (Atherton, CA) didn't lose a game in either of her matches. After teaming with
Morgane Flournoy (Grosse Pointe, MI) for an 8-0 win over Harper Zacharias and Jamie-Rose Graham at No. 2 doubles, she earned a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Zacharias at No. 3 singles.
Ashley Fair (Laguna Beach, CA) also notched a 6-0, 6-0 singles win over Eva Grunblatt in the No. 5 position.
No. 1
Frances Cornwall (Poway, CA) defeated Katie Esposito by a score of 6-2, 6-1, while
Tara Edwards (Littleton, CO) topped Katri Shields 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 singles. Flournoy beat Graham 6-0, 6-4 in the No. 4 spot, and
Rachael Hahn (Lake Oswego, OR) completed the singles sweep by notching a 6-3, 6-0 triumph over Nicole Parides at the No. 6 position.
Cornwall only played singles on Friday, so Edwards teamed with
Sarra Yekta (Las Vegas, NV) to post an 8-1 win over Esposito and Shields at No. 1 doubles. The Brewers' No. 3 pair of Fair and Hahn, meanwhile, defeated Grunblatt and Eva Miller by an 8-3 count.
The Brewers have one match remaining in the fall portion of their schedule. Vassar travels to Union (0-1, 0-1 Liberty) for another Liberty League contest at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
