GENEVA, N.Y. – Third-seeded
Frances Cornwall (Poway, CA) and
Tara Edwards (Littleton, CO) of the Vassar College women's tennis team played for the doubles title at the Intercollegiate Tennis Associaton (ITA) Northeast Regional Championships on Monday. In a tight three-set affair, Cornwall and Edwards dropped a 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 decision to NYU's Coco Kulle and Flyora Shiyanova, the No. 4 seeds.
After Cornwall and Edwards took the first set by a 6-3 count, Kulle and Shiyanova won the second set 6-1. The NYU tandem then got an early break in the third set to go up 2-0 before Cornwall and Edwards broke back for 2-2. NYU regained the break advantage at 5-3, but the Vassar duo once again responded to even the score at 5-5. However, Kulle and Shiyanova held serve to go up 6-5, then broke again in the final game to clinch their second straight ITA Northeast Regional title.
Cornwall and Edwards' runner-up performance marks Vassar's best showing at the ITA Regionals since Ava Sadeghi and Samantha Schapiro also reached the doubles final in 2014.
Kate Christensen won the singles championship that year, as well. Sadeghi and Schapiro were the ITA Northeast Regional doubles champions in 2012.
The Brewers conclude their fall season with a pair of Liberty League matches this weekend. Vassar hosts Bard at 4:30 p.m. on Friday before visiting Union at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
