RIVERDALE, N.Y. – On Sunday afternoon, the Vassar College women's soccer team traveled to NYU for its first road contest of the season. Unfortunately, it was also the Brewers' (1-1-0) first loss of the season, as the Violets (2-0-0) notched a 5-1 victory at Gaelic Park.
NYU's Alex Benedict opened the scoring in the eighth minute, and the Violets added tallies by Julia Raith and Francesca Pellerito before
Rebecca Andrews (Los Altos, CA) got Vassar on the board. In the 37
th minute, she got free on the right side of the box and chipped one over the goalkeeper's head to cut the Brewers' deficit to 3-1.
However, NYU extended its cushion to 5-1 with a pair of second-half scores. Isabelle Turner found the back of the net in the 53
rd minute, and Jade Keane put home a feed from Pellerito 21 minutes to cap the scoring.
The Violets outshot the Brewers 16-2, including a 9-2 edge in shots on goal. Vassar goalkeeper
Fiona Walsh (Hackettstown, NJ) (1-1-0) made four saves, while NYU goalkeeper Sophia Danielsen (2-0-0) recorded one save in the win.
Next weekend, the Brewers continue their four-game road trip by participating in the Engineering Cup at Stevens. Vassar begins the tournament with an 8 p.m. matchup against No. 21 Swarthmore (2-0-0) on Friday.
