HOBOKEN, N.J. – On Friday night, the Vassar College women's soccer team took on 21
st-ranked Swarthmore in the 15
th Annual Engineering Cup at Stevens Institute of Technology. The Brewers (1-2-0) fell behind 2-0 before mounting a furious second-half comeback. However, a late defensive stand gave the Garnet (3-0-0) a 2-1 victory at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.
Swarthmore got a pair of Marin McCoy goals in the 29
th minute and the 56
th minute to build a 2-0 cushion. Vassar cut that margin in half, however, when
Ashley Ferry (Westfield, NJ) fed
Emma Tanner (Florence, MA) in the middle of the box, and she knocked it home to put the Brewers on the scoreboard.
It looked like the Garnet might regain their two-goal advantage in the 78
th minute, but
Jordan Moss (Tustin, CA) made an incredible stop on the goal line with goalkeeper
Fiona Walsh (Hackettstown, NJ) out of position to keep it a 2-1 game. Vassar then had an opportunity to tie the game in the final minute when Ferry's opportunity was deflected out of bounds. That shot earned the Brewers a corner kick with the seconds winding down, and the clock ran out before Vassar was able to get a look at the net.
Tanner's goal was the first of her career, while Ferry's assist means she has been involved in three of the Brewers' four tallies this season. Walsh (1-2-0) faced 19 Swarthmore shots and registered six saves.
Amy Harris and Sydney Covitz assisted on McCoy's two goals for the Garnet. Amy Shmoys started in goal, while Chantal Reyes (1-0-0) played the second half and earned the win.
The Brewers return to the DeBaun Athletic Complex on Sunday for day two of the Engineering Cup. Vassar takes on host Stevens (2-1-0) at 11 a.m.
