Brewers Wrap Up Play at Vassar Scramble

Complete Results (PDF)

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. –
The Vassar College women's tennis team concluded the season-opening Vassar Scramble on Sunday at the Josselyn Tennis Courts.  After playing two rounds of singles and one of doubles on Saturday, that was reversed on Sunday, with each player contesting two doubles and one singles match.

Players competed in up to six matches each during the two-day event, which included Connecticut College, New Paltz and NYU, as well as the host Brewers.  Vassar posted a combined record of 22-9 for the weekend, with four of the Brewers' losses coming in third-set tiebreakers.

Morgane Flournoy (Grosse Pointe, MI) completed an undefeated singles weekend by defeating Connecticut College's Meredith Kenny.  Also earning singles victories on Sunday were Frances Cornwall (Poway, CA), who defeated Mariah Warren of Connecticut College in straight sets, and Ashley Fair (Laguna Beach, CA), who notched a three-set triumph over New Paltz's Victoria Zezula.

One element of the weekend's scramble format was the opportunity for coaches to experiment with different doubles teams.  Vassar Head Coach Kathy Campbell did just that, using completely different pairings in both matches on Sunday, none of which were utilized on Saturday.

Vassar ended up 4-2 in Sunday's doubles action, with Cornwall and Tara Edwards (Littleton, CO) both going 2-0.  They combined to beat NYU's Coco Kulle and Flyora Shiyanova before each winning with a different partner later on.  Cornwall and Flournoy defeated Kenny and Brooke Scully of Connecticut College, while Edwards joined with Melina Stavropoulos (Atherton, CA) for a victory over Kate Shaffer and Judy Kam of NYU.

"I am so very happy with our level of competitiveness," Campbell said.  "Every team member demonstrated improvement from last spring, and our positive team energy is amazing and inspiring.  The event was such a positive and productive team experience."

Next weekend, Vassar will participate in the annual Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Regional Championships.  The tournament will take place at William Smith College in Geneva, NY, from Saturday-Monday.
