POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – On a beautiful Saturday at the Josselyn Tennis Courts, the Vassar College women's tennis team opened its 2018-19 season by hosting the annual Vassar Scramble.  The Brewers welcomed Connecticut College, New Paltz and NYU for the event, which featured two singles and one doubles round on the first day of competition.
 
"I am so proud of the exemplary team support the Vassar players demonstrated for one another in our first event of the new school year," Head Coach Kathy Campbell said.  "Our competitiveness and composure on the court was also stellar.  Vassar posted a 15-3 mark on the day, with two of the losses coming in third set tiebreakers."
 
Tara Edwards (Littleton, CO), Melina Stavropoulos (Atherton, CA) and Sarra Yekta (Las Vegas, NV) each won both of their singles matches in straight sets, while Edwards and Yetka also teamed up for a doubles victory.  Morgane Flournoy (Grosse Pointe, MI) and Rachael Hahn (Lake Oswego, OR) went 2-0 in singles play, as well.  Ashley Fair (Laguna Beach, CA) played a pair of three-setters, winning one and losing the other, and Frances Cornwall (Poway, CA) followed up a three-set loss with a straight-sets win.
 
Vista Grinde (Virginia Beach, VA) dropped her only singles match, but earned a win in doubles with Hahn.  Fair and Stavropoulos also won their doubles match.
 
Day two of the event is scheduled to get underway at 9 a.m. on Sunday.  Each player is tentatively scheduled for two doubles matches, as well as one singles round.
