POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – Junior defender
Henrik Olsson (Tokyo, Japan) scored the only goal of the game at the 31
st minute, as Vassar held on to shut out New Paltz on Wednesday afternoon. In another physical game, the Brewers outshot the Hawks 14-11. With the win, Vassar moves to 4-1, while New Paltz slips to 4-2.
Neither team took control early in the game, with offense rolling back-and-forth. Both sides had opportunities to score, but the defense shut anything down before it progressed. Momentum began to shift after the Hawks' defense defelcted the ball out of bounds.Â
Andrew Goldsmith (Princeton, NJ) lined up the corner on the right side and launched the ball into
Tyler Gilmore (Coronado, CA) who made the first attempt. Guzzo recorded the save, but hit the ball into Olsson who easily knocked it back for his first goal of the season.
Playing from behind, New Paltz increased their intensity, outshooting Vassar 6-5 in the second half. Junior goalkeeper
Will Marment (Stamford, CT) made a remarkable save at the 18
th minute to prevent the Hawks from tying. Schuyler Mann rocketed a shot from ten yards out at the upper-right corner of the net, but Marment stretched out just enough for the clutch save.
New Paltz kept the pressure going, but the Brewers defense proved to be too much and the team hung on for the victory.
Vassar is back in action on Sept. 15 for a road contest against Oneonta at 2 p.m. Â
