ONEONTA, NY – SUNY Oneonta midfielder Alejandro Ruiz scored the opening goal at the 20
th minute on the way to the Red Dragons' 2-0 victory over the Vassar men's soccer team on Saturday afternoon. The Brewers managed to outshoot the home team 15-14, but could not find net as the team moves to 4-2 overall. Oneonta jumps to 3-1-2 following the game. Â
Neither team generated much offense early, until the Red Dragons put away the first score on their second shot of the first half. Ruiz launched the shot from 35-yards out into the top of the net to put Oneonta up 1-0. Vassar goalkeeper
Will Marment (Stamford, CT) made the save attempt, but it was just out of reach for the junior.
Chances came for the Brewers, with junior
Mattie Mrlik (San Francisco, CA) accounting for seven shots in the game, with six of them being on goal. Red Dragons' goalkeeper Nicholas Giordano was unbreakable when under pressure, finishing the day with nine saves in addition to the shutout.
Late in the second, Oneonta prevented a late Vassar comeback when Nicholas Plate lined up for the corner and found Witman Hernandez for the Red Dragons' second goal at the 76
th mark. The Brewers would outshoot Oneonta 3-1 in the final 12 minutes, but the deficient proved too much in the long run.
Vassar returns to action on Tues. Sept. 18 at 4 p.m. for a home contest against Wesleyan.
