Poughkeepsie, N.Y. – After an offensive showing the night before, the Vassar field hockey team kept rolling in the Betty Richey Championship game against SUNY Genseo. Senior
Alyssa More (Wilmington ,DE) picked up two goal and assist en route to the Brewers 4-1 victory over the Knights, and was named the tournament MVP.
With the win, Vassar moves to 2-0 overall, while Geneseo slips to 1-1. This is the fifth-consecutive Betty Richey tournament win for Vassar and seventh overall. "It's absolutely important to win our home tournament, it means the world to us," said head coach
Michael Warari, "We worked hard on scoring and finishing, so it is a nice reward."
The win is coming off a 10-0 win over Manhattanville, but the Vassar offensive did not slump early on, scoring in the first three minutes of play. The Brewers drew a foul in the Knights' circle with
Mikayla Young (Honesdale, PA) lining up on the left side for the corner. Young shot the ball perfectly to More who quickly passed it back. Young was able to hit the ball midair and direct it past the goalkeeper to give Vassar the early 1-0 lead.
In similar fashion to the first goal, Young lined upped in the same spot for a penalty corner. Young picked up
Cristina Lopez (Timonium, DE) at the top of the circle when she rifled the shot straight into the Geneseo goalkeeper.
Dara Studnitzer (New City, NY) found the deflection in front of the net and tapped the ball away.
Grace Amell (West Hartford, CT) saw her chance when the ball rolled her way and quickly tipped it past the goalie.
Less than two minutes later, More picked up her first goal of the game off a crafty backwards pass from
Megan Caveny (Cicero, NY). Swarmed by defenders and almost losing the ball out-of-bounds, Caveny found More driving down the middle to give Vassar the 3-0 lead at the 12:45 mark.
Geneseo would score off a penalty corner before the half ended. A scramble after the initial pass ensued with Lydia Volpe hitting the shot just out of reach of goalkeeper
Liz Rotolo (Lebanon, NJ).
Vassar kept the tempo up in the second, out shooting the Knights 11-3. Neither team would score until the 56
th minute when More hit the ball off a Geneseo defender and back into the net.
Rotolo recorded five saves for the Brewers, while More led with five shots. In addition to More being named MVP,
Monica Feeley (Harrisburg, PA), Caveny, Lopez and
Natalie Johnston (Trappe, PA) were named to the all-tournament team.
A four-game road trip awaits the Brewers, starting when the team travels to Virginia to face Christopher Newport on Fri. Sept. 7 at 3 p.m.
