Danbury, CT – In a gritty battle against Western Connecticut,
Mattie Mrlik (San Francisco, CA) proved to be the difference maker. The junior forward found net in the final seconds of the first half to give the Brewers the eventual 1-0 win.
In tonight's match, three freshmen made their career debuts in Eamon Geragthy (Oneonta, NY),
Quinn Tunnell (Hershey, PA) and
Reis Kissel (Mercer Island, WA).
Defenses set the tone early with neither team having a shot advantage at 14 each. With nine seconds remaining in the first half, Mrlik took advantage of a failed clear by the Colonials' defense. He then was able to beat out the lone defender for the upper left-side goal at the 44:51 mark.
After a few spouts of offensive from Western Connecticut early in the second, both defenses locked up again. Vassar managed to take a slight shot advantage, but neither team would score.
Will Marment (Stamford, CT) recorded the shutout for the fourth of his career and picked up six saves on the day.
Vassar continues their road trip on Sept. 2 against Mount Saint Mary at 5 p.m. The Brewers then come home for their next three games.
